BAND BAJA BARAAT – THE STORY OF BIG FAT BOLLYWOOD WEDDINGS

13:31:00

Indians are known to have large, traditional weddings that are often extravagant. But when it comes to Bollywood weddings, the grandness and overindulgence often touch dizzying heights. These weddings create a buzz long before the D-Day, thanks to the massive fan following that majority of B-town celebs enjoy. It’s not just the couple that we watch with keen interest, but take note of every aspect of the wedding – from clothes to jewelry and wedding invites.

Yes, Bollywood weddings are the stuff that fairytales are made of, where the couple treats themselves and their guests like royalty, throwing moderation to the wind.

Let’s take a look at how Bollywood celebs pulled out all the stops to make their gala weddings an affair to remember:

Outfits –
The most recent celeb wedding outfit to make waves was BipashaBasu’s which she wore when she married Karan Singh Grover. Bipasha donned a stunning red Sabyasaachi worn in the traditional Bengali style and a flowery pastel pink and gold lehenga for her Mehendi ceremony. ShilpaShetty wore outfits by ace designer TarunTahiliani while the groom chose the designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil to dress him up. It is said that Shilpa splurged 50 lakhs on her bridal sari that had as many as 8000 Swarovski crystals embellished on it.

Jewellery–
Glittering jewellery is an essential part of Bollywood weddings. Shilpa Shetty wore breathtaking Kundan jewellery with uncut diamonds and emeralds. Her 4 crore wedding didn’t include the cost of her 20 carat diamond ring worth Rs. 3 crore! While Kareena Kapoor’s royal wedding jewellery including the trademark maangteeka has been pegged at Rs.4 million.

Wedding Invites –
When every guest comes under the scanner at a Bollywood wedding, it’s goes without saying that invitations require intense attention to detail too! Shahid Kapoor and Mira’s wedding invitation was in a turquoise and cream combo, enclosed in a similarly elegant coloured box containing four tiny bottles of best quality honey and exotic herbal teas. While Vivek Oberoi and Priyanka Alva had their cards made from crushed gemstones and real gold and sent them with chocolates and a limited edition Ganifa painting in a jewelry box made of velvet. It is said that the wedding invites were Rs. 7000 each.

Opulence –
It isn’t called a “big fat Indian wedding” until there is an ostentatious display of wealth. Vikram Chatwal and Priya Sachdev arranged for private jets to pick up guests from different countries while Abhishek-Ashwairya wedding is rumoured to have helicopters throwing flowers on guests.

While many celebrities chose to have their wedding in their own luxury residences, some preferred to get married at a five star hotel or having a destination wedding.

Whether at private residences, nearby cities or international destinations, these events sparkled with big names and grandeur – with exotic cuisine and entertainment that made the headlines for weeks to follow.
